Sheriff Kenneth T. Furlong was born and raised in Carson City. He graduated from Carson High in 1975, then enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1978. While in the Air Force, Kenny earned an Associates Degree in Police Science, another Associates Degree in Criminal Justice and a Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice Administration.
The sheriff retired from the USAF, Office of Special Investigations, in 1998. Before his election to the Office of Sheriff in 2003, Kenny was employed with the Department of Public Safety, Investigations Division and Parole and Probation.
Since taking office, Sheriff Furlong has introduced several new programs and has reestablished a few from the past. The most visible programs include: Volunteers in Policing, Chaplain's Program, Community Resource Officers, and a revitalized Reserve Program. He is committed to enhancing law enforcement in Carson City through educational opportunities, community involvement and youth/senior citizen contacts.
Sheriff Furlong's leadership philosophy is to continuously seek opportunities that build upon the desires of the community. He insists initiatives should contain components for education, information and enforcement. As a result of his philosophy, Carson City has benefited in efficient and effective law enforcement with heavy community involvement.
As a result of Sheriff Furlong's engagement in the community, he is seen on-duty at every community event, the organizer of the award winning National Night Out, Cops-n-Kids, Spaghetti Dinner, Sheriff's Open House/Street Fair and actively partners with the Boys & Girls Club, Ron Wood Family Resource Center, Carson Community Counseling, Rotary, CASI, Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Business Association, and many more.
Kenny spends his free time with wife, Phyllis, and the families of their two children. He also enjoys cars, motorcycles, sports, boating and computers.
Sheriff Furlong is the 26th Sheriff to serve Ormsby County/Carson City since 1861.
