Karen Abowd has lived in Carson City since 1981. She is president and founder of “The Greenhouse Project,” driving force for Carson City’s Flower Basket Sponsorship Program, and formerly Vice Chairperson for the Carson City Cultural Commission. She currently sits on the Arts and Culture Commission. She sits on the board for the Carson City Visitors Bureau (CCVB), was a member of the Events and Marketing Committees for the CCVB and is the Redevelopment Authority Chair as well as Mayor Pro-Tem.
Karen has been an active mentor for her church’s youth for the last 19 years, and has been involved with Poverty and Economic Development CRT1, We Can, the Carson City Downtown Consortium Beautification and Carson City’s School District Master Planning Community Relations Committee. Karen is also a commissioner for the Carson Water Subconservancy, a member of the Carson City Human Services Tripartite Board of Directors as well as a member of the Cross-jurisdictional Sharing Project Stakeholders Committee for Environmental Health, and the Board’s representative for Nevada Works.
She is currently working with a collaboration of non-profits that include Ron Wood, Food for Thought, the Boys and Girls Club, and the Greenhouse Project to launch a Food Hub in Carson City.
Karen is married to Charlie Abowd and together they have raised a daughter and two sons and have four grandchildren. Karen attended the University of Santa Clara for three years and graduated from University of Nevada Reno with a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design, a career she has been successful in for two decades. Karen has diversified business experience as co-owner with her husband of Café at Adele’s in Carson City. Monthly she and her husband share time with the Lonely Hearts Club in Reno feeding the homeless at Tent City.
In her minimal free time, Karen enjoys gardening, painting, playing the piano and spending time with her grandchildren.
