Description: The CERT Academy [Community Emergency Response Team] will provide information for citizens to become prepared for a local emergency or disaster. Class time is 21 hours and includes light search and rescue, disaster medical operations, and fire safety. The training is designed to educate citizens to prepare for, respond to, and recover from an unplanned disastrous event that overwhelm the existing response capability. After completion of the Academy there will be an opportunity to join a formal volunteer CERT group that is affiliated with a law enforcement agency or fire department. The training curriculum was developed and approved for the National CERT Program by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Department of Homeland Security.

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program utilizes Carson City Fire Department and other supporting agencies to prepare citizens for all kinds of emergencies and to aid local emergency services in the event of a disaster in their community. The CERT program is part of a nationwide effort to empower citizens in preparedness and response to major emergencies. CERT members will be trained and certified in disaster preparedness, fire suppression, emergency operations, search and rescue techniques, and response to terrorism. They learn life-saving and decision-making skills in order to decrease injury and mortality; providing help until professional life support services arrive.
