The Carson City Office of the Public Defender was established pursuant to Bill No. 110, Ordinance No. 2023-9, which was unanimously passed by the Board of Supervisors on June 15, 2023. The Board then voted unanimously to appoint Charles H. Odgers as Public Defender.
The Office officially opened its doors on July 1, 2023, and immediately assumed the duties of representing indigent defendants in Carson City.
In August, 2023, Carson City and Storey County entered into an interlocal agreement allowing the Carson City Public Defender’s Office to also provide indigent defense in Storey County, including the areas of Virginia City, Mark Twain, and Lockwood, NV.
Prior to the creation of the Carson City Public Defender's Office, indigent defense services for the citizens of Carson City and Storey County were provided by the Nevada State Public Defender.
